A web camera is simply a wireless web camera that streams or feeds an image or video to an online computer system, like the Internet. Web cameras are usually small web cameras that sit on a small stand, plug into a USB port, or are automatically built into the system itself. Most people choose web cams because they're easy to use and inexpensive. Web cams also can be used to obtain security footage of a building, room, school, home, office building or even a car. The web browser has the ability to save the captured image to the hard drive, but if the captured images are too large to be stored, the webcat tool will upload the historical archive directly to the user's computer.
The historical archive is also useful in the case of disaster recovery. Many homes have been damaged during both major hurricanes and tornadoes. Many homeowners may not have flood insurance, and in such cases, the coastal Web cameras can act as a useful tool in providing historical footage to potential insurance companies. Many homeowners will attempt to make their home safer by installing items such as smoke detectors and hurricane shutters, but these items can't always be installed immediately following a catastrophe.

They are used to display images for customers to see while they wait in line or drive to their location. Retailers may also use them to provide live demonstrations to prospective customers.
