Fund Kassel - Helping Refugee Students at the University of Kassel

The Fund Kassel initiative is aimed at helping international students in securing the financial support they need for their studies. Proof of funding is required, usually in the form of a six-figure amount, and the university will disburse the required funds to students. Any extra funds that remain will go towards the support of refugee students at the University of Kassel.

The Fund Kassel started as a parish pastor who told his congregation that there were Christians in India who were unable to pay for their education. Within a week, the parishioners collected enough money to create a charitable association. This organization, AUSBILDUNGSHILFE (Association for Educational Aid), now has over one million members in the Kurhessen-Waldeck region and supports students from ten countries. The association's honorary DAXFonds board sets the budget and decides on partners. However, the board does not choose the recipients of the scholarships.

The Community Foundation was established by Ruth and Bud Kassel to help local nonprofit organizations. Today, Fund Kassel provides grants to a wide range of local groups. The Foundation also provides support for research projects. In addition, the foundation hosts information events on various funding lines. Below are just a few of the programs it supports:

The Wintershall Dea is a group that supports refugees in North Hesse. Recently, two groups of refugee students visited Kassel on a scholarship. The students visited the Bergpark Wilhelmshohe and documenta fifteen. They had a memorable time and grew closer to their new homes. The students are now able to work part-time and pursue a higher education.
