A Course in Miracles

Described by the New York Times as an "esoteric bible that has gone mainstream," A Course in Miracles is an influential book that has shaped the lives of millions of people. Designed as a self-study system of spiritual psychology, the Course has profound spiritual teachings and far-reaching psychological insights. It is also unique in its relentless emphasis on forgiveness, as a moment-by-moment practice that transforms attitudes and behavior.

The course began with two Columbia University psychologists who were frustrated by the anger and division in their department. Helen Schucman and William Thetford, respected leaders in their field, decided to try something different. They each committed to finding a way to peace. In the summer of 1965, Helen started a notebook with a simple title, A course in miracles. Over the next seven years she dictated a 650-page Text (laying out the philosophical foundation of the course), 500-page Workbook of 365 daily meditations (prescribes a spiritual discipline), and 90-page Manual for Teachers, which extends the course's thought system to those who want to teach it.

Its premise is that the greatest miracle in life is gaining complete awareness of love's presence in one's life. It says this awareness comes from a reversal of perception, whereby we begin to see the world as an illusion and recognize that the physical world is not real. The Course also emphasizes that everyone shares the same potential for enlightenment.

ACIM is ecumenical in its spirituality, containing ideas that are consistent with the core wisdom found in every major world religion. However, it also challenges many of the beliefs and doctrines of Christianity. For example, the Course teaches that Jesus did not die on the cross to atone for the sins of humanity but rather to make it clear that sin is only a misperception of God's love.

The Course has become a best seller in numerous formats and is embraced by people of all ages, races and religious backgrounds. It has even influenced prominent spiritual teachers and writers such as Eckhart Tolle, Wayne Dyer, and Gabrielle Bernstein, who use its ideas without explicitly identifying themselves as followers of the course. Although there are several free versions of the course available online, many students find it helpful to buy a copy of the original book. It is not a difficult read, but it does require a commitment to read and practice its lessons. To help those who have such a commitment, the Miracle Network publishes the book's daily Workbook Lessons, and also provides a series of audio tapes of talks that cover the lessons in their entirety. It also produces an on-line journal and a quarterly magazine, both of which feature essays about the application of the course's principles in daily life. The work of the Miracle Network is supported by donations from individuals who are dedicated to making a difference in the world through practicing the principles of the course.
